What is Rully and where can I find it?
Rully is a French Burgundian wine made from the Chardonnay grape. In good vintage years ( I'm not an expert on this) Rully wines can porvide some great value for your wallet. Though Rully may not be high up on the French Burgundy pyramid scale with Montrachet being the cadillac of French Burgundy and Bourogne being the Chevy of Burgundy a good Rully can provide significant value. I'm a creature of habit and like Chardonnay's of California but decided to venture outside my comfort zone and explore another twist of the Chardonnay grape.
I had this wine with a friend of mine at a nice BYOB restaurant in Westfield, NJ. The wine expressed hints of melon and peach with a nice medium colored yellow. The body was not as full as Big California Charonnay but with a nice medium body and a very clean, even crisp finish. Not quite what I was expecting. Upon opening, the wine was very acidic, but as the evening wore on the acidity seemed to calm down and the wine exhibited a nice balance between acid and alcohol As time went on further, I seemed to enjoy this wine more. Maybe it was the alcohol, maybe it was truly the wine, but at the end of the evening I told my friend I really "enjoyed this wine". Oh and btw we had this yummy wine with talapia and tuna, though I seemed to think it went better with the talapia.
A side note: I searched on the internet for other tasting notes on this wine and could not come up with any, only that the 2004 vintage was a so-so vintage for Rully and that the Rully region in France is often overlooked yet produces some good wines for the money. You would not have known that by the price I paid..$40.00!!
All in all a winner
