The Heitz Cellars Napa Cabernet 2004 is one of my favorite wine styles. Good firm tannins with deep fruit and oak bouquet. I had this Cabernet as part of a wine pairing with some fabulous pasta at Theresas in Westfield, NJ.
I have had Heitz Cellars before and have grown accustomed to the good firm tannins and long finish. However, this bottle after opening seemed to be lacking in its deep bouquet and finish. Maybe because I popped and poured. I was a little dissapointed. The bouquet was dark fruit and chocolate but the finish was not there. After about 1 hr. of dining on some great pasta the bouquet emerged a little more but the fininsh was still lacking. The body was thin, not like a good typical Napa Cabernet.
Curiously, I dug up some wine notes: With its rich varietal flavors, the 2004 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful expression of this astounding vintage. This wine delivers on the palate what it promises in the nose a generous mouthful of dark cherry and a touch of spicy plum. With a graceful marriage of fruit and oak, this powerful Cabernet glides smoothly along to an elegant finish. This is a terrific wine to drink now, and it will also make an exciting addition to your cellar!
So after reading the notes I decided to hunt down another bottle. At $35/bottle, that somewhat gray price point , nothing mediocre, nothing extraordinary, it surely was a toss up in my mind if I should go on a treasure hunt or pass on it. Just too many wines in the wine universe.
Anyway, I went with my heart and am currently searching out another bottle.
Would I buy this baby again?
I'm curious to see if another bottle does better.
