Part of my American Wine Society wine tasting of good Cabs..
I had this wine as part of my AWS Cabernet Sauvignon wine tasting. As part of the tasting we sampled 6 Cabs from the 2005 vintage. Three Californian Cabs, one Cab from Washington State, one Cab from Australia and another cab from Chilea.
All 6 wines were opened and allowed to breathe for approximatley 2 hrs before tasting. In between wines, a selection of cheeses and grilled sausages were served, each paired to compliment the Cab served. The wines were scored according to AWS standards and the Rombauer scored first place.
The Rombauer was deep garnet in the glass with aromas of chocolate and cherries. While the bouquet was not as dominant as compared to the Austrialian and Chilean wines, the Rombauer won hands down on sturcutre and finish. Tight tannins only to get better with bottle time and a long finish. The mouth feel was great and the wine paired nicely with an assorment ot cheeses and grilled sausages.
Rombauer Vineyards is located in Napa Valley and produces great Cabs. Their wines are sometimes hard to get a hold of,so my suggestion is if you find a Cab from them buy it and give it a whirl. Their wines are not cheap so be prepared to spend about $35 and upwards.
Would I buy this wine again?
You bet and I already did!
