Raisins and dried prunes...
Amarone is a special wine variety relatively unknown unless your're a fan of Italian wines. It is a blend of the Corvina grape and other wine varieties. The grapes are left to dry on reed mats before frementing which produces a wine rich in flavor similar to dried raisins and prunes. Amarone goes well with hearty meals of steak, veal and stews. It is a wine that stands up to a hearty meal, rich and full flavored
Now to the Armarone:
I let the Amarone breathe for approx. 1 hr. before drinking. In the glass it was almost similar to a Pinot Noir., a transparent red. On the nose there was cherry and chocolate. The flavors of dried raisin and prunes were dominant but when it came to the body something was lacking. The wine was flabby with little body. The finish was short and not lingering. The wine did not scream for me to drink MORE, MORE. As a matter of fact I could only drink 1 glass(which is unusal) with my hearty chicken dinner. Nothing powerful and nothing to make me want to buy some more. Just a very mediocre wine and for the price of $30/bottle, not worth the price. Some how I was expecting more from this wine. I corked the bottle and tried it again the following evening and the Amarone opened up somewhat, but again nothing overwhelming at that price point. A disappointment at that price. Maybe at $15/bottle I may have considered trying another bottle.
Would I buy this again?
Not at this price. If $15/ bottle..maybe
